Almost every day I see a Dell commercial on TV and ESPECIALLY on websites. Yesterday they sponsored the Yankee scoreboard and the announcer reads off, "Dell, a computer built keeping one thing in mind, you"
My ass... First off, if you are going to advertise don't lie to me. My computer is not built for me, it is built for a dude from a 3rd world country who doesn't give a shit how his computer works, as long as he can afford one, and this was worth $2000, I can't imagine how shitty Dell's $500 computers are. Secondly, don't advertise as much. I bet I could ask 1000 people if they have heard of Dell, around 850 would say yes (guestimation) Thus, stop spending money on advertising and spend more on quality products.
Maybe then Dell could send out processor fans that last more than a year. Maybe they could ship out liquid cooling. If I estimate my actual computer parts worth I am sure there would be enough money leftover for liquid cooling:
(prices estimated or exact from newegg.com unless otherwise stated)
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz - $318.00
nVidia GEForce 7300 LE - ~$50.00
Unknown 160GB HD - ~$60.00
Unknown 1GB RAM - ~!$60.00
Dell 17"LCD Monitor - $169.00 (from dell site)
(from now on I am guessing the prices)
Case - ~$20.00
Speakers - ~$35.00
Intel Mobo - ~$70.00
Fans - ~$2.00
Sound Card - ~$15.00
Disk drives - ~$40.00
All other shit - ~$50.00
Total: $809.00
Adding software:
XP - ~$150.00
MS Works - ~$80.00
New Total: $1039.00
Tech support - ~$250.00
Final Total: $1289.00
Dell currently made $711 off of me. With the complete replacement computer and many other replacements I am probably on the other end of the bargain though. This is how they make their money. People don't know what shit they buy, dont buy tech support, and it breaks. Simple income on their part, but when you get someone who replaces everything as soon as it breaks, they lose money. There are not many people like this compared to the whole population of dell owers, like my school. 2 or 3 computers are broken and they are only a few years old, since my school sucks they wont get replacements. 100 computers bought... easy money. That overpricing is complete bullshit. If they didn't advertise as much they could lower prices and have their computers cost somewhat
what their worth is.

You're a little off on your estimations on the retail prices of some of the internal componants. The custom-built Intel mobo that they use is probably closer to $150 retail, and the case is goign to be around the same too. Factor in all the licensing fees for the other programs (Mcaffee, Roxio, Sonic, etc) and that margin shrinks even more. You also have to remember that the prices you're getting now are not the same as when you would have bought your machine. Your CPU could have been $200-300 more expensive when you first bought it.
Of course, Dell can buy wholesale, and with considerable volume discount, which is how they can offer the 25% off coupons and the sales that they do without flinching too much. Sounds like you just didnt wait to pull the trigger until it went on sale. |
