Dell makes computers that are cheap and unreliable- this is a pretty well-accepted fact. The thing that gets me is how the novices all think Dells are the best computers available...simply because they spend the most on advertising. It's actually a sick commentary on the mind of the American public more than anything.
Dell parades around as the Great American Success Story. Their whole image is wrapped up in American patriotism. Just beneath the surface, this image is utterly false. How appropriate that Michael Dell is a huge Bush contributor. Always about the money, never the substance.
Dell is a company that does more to support the third world than almost any other. I guess we should praise them as humanitarians for that (i'm joking).
All of their components are made of the cheapest materials available to man, manufactured in the equivelant of sweatshops. They figure who cares if they get a 25% failure rate? They already have your money. They'll just replace your faulty parts with more faulty parts.
Buying everything from overseas was not enough for Michael Dell. He couldn't stand the fact that tech support specialists were making the princely sum of $9 an hour in the States, so he had to outsource all support to India. Now we have a customer base who is frustrated beyond belief every time they have to make contact with the company. Great move. This will be the companys undoing over the long term.
So let's see, Dell has outsourced every job it possibly could to third-world countries. It has probably filled the majority of American tech jobs with Indian Visa holders. All of the companies products are manufactured in Asia. They slap a Dell label on a garbage product and sells it for thousands to gullible American sheep. And this guy is a patriotic republican?!!! I'm getting sick.
Bottom line....Michael Dell sucks and so do Dell computers. |

Poignant, Dee. You nailed the corporate politics, firmly "Third World Order". To ascribe that to Michael personally is a bit of a leap, but he was indeed a major Bush contributor (and for that I shall find it difficult to forgive him; Bush has damaged the integrity of the country in ways that have yet to be fully accounted).
The geopolitics of industrializing India and China are indeed questionable. Anything but 'conservative'. Industrialists view these as 'expansion markets', largely because of the sheer headcount in those two regions. The respective governments are not the third-world fools we'd like to take them for. In return for granting us access to their markets without prohibitive tariffs, they've demanded a piece of the action-- access to OUR markets. Not altogether unreasonable. Politically it would have better been phased-in instead of dumped on us all at once in January 2001, but Karl Rove is an industrial-supremacist and sees no other point of view.
And to circle back to your observation about Americans doing whatever advertising tells them to... gawd, that opens a whole case of worms (not just a can). Like, umm, "Leave no child behind". Core of the program, sell standardized tests in math and science to individual schools and districts. Never mind that the exact same administration is sending math and science jobs to China and India as fast as they can. But it sure as hell preempts the schools from teaching history, civics, rational thought, media awareness, all the things that threaten mindless acceptance/compliance with spin. Doesn't it? How convenient. Just a coincidence I'm sure. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

Mid and top level management, along with the Board of Directors, hasn't been shipped overseas ... yet. |

DeeStylz: You nailed it. Dell is cutting costs as much as it can, so it outsources as much as possible. Is this the belly of the beast? Probably, but they are not alone in doing so. Much of the onus for the purported poor tech support lies on the outsourcing companies. It's up to them to ensure the techs are able to perform their jobs, which is difficult when they all seem to have the same expertise.
Dell does sell on image. It's an outdated image, where they still tout having the best tech support in the industry. That was many years ago. I remember joining Dell hoping to be part of that. Instead, I was part of the, "Get them off the phone quick" outsourcing bandwagon that seems to be all the rage. Almost any large brand sells on image. Computers, clothing, and automotive industries all bank on having an image that people can relate to. Clothing in particular. It wouldn't matter if a shirt looked absolutely stupid so long as it had Tommy Hilfiger or Nike on it somewhere. That makes it fashionable. _________________ I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it.
