Not a f**kin' dime. It's sold at a loss. Ask anyone in the organization and they'll tell you the same. Even in bulk, the cost for parts and assembly, and staffing doesn't come close to $299.
They do that to try and make a groundswell of support for their failing name and product. The only money they make nowadays is done through DFS, Corporate clients, and Dell On Call which is profiteering at its finest. |

You know what's really funny about the 299 systems You can buy the same system for >$1200 from Aaron's rent to own. WTF is wrong with people, thinking they need to go there for a system. haha. _________________ Have you seen my dell laptop?

They don't make money for PC sales, as was said earlier. It's probably like microsoft selling the xbox at a loss, because they get you with other things. _________________ "The art of Engineering is knowing what you can safely ignore." -Dr. H. Hess

First time I heard that! I love it!
Dell doesn't lose money on cheapie systems. You underestimate just just how cheap a 2400 is. The Intel chipset is two generations old. They give it away, to get rid of it without calling Goodwill. The chipset is half the cost of the motherboard, so those are 'almost free' too. In the quantities Dell buys them, power supplies, chassis and harddrives cost around $10 each. Hell, the labor to put the rubber feet on the chassis is a 'substantial' cost. Dell is trying to negotiate-away the "Intel Inside" stickers because of the labor cost of affixing them! And what other use is there for Celerons, besides selling them to people who want the gawdam-cheapest-ass box they can buy? They're 'almost free' too, being essentially defective Pentiums. Then there's the 'bloatware' kickbacks.
If you only make $10 on each of 10 million boxes, you STILL make $100 million. And that's just if you end up SELLING the $299 system. The $299 price gets TONS of people to call. Sales, tell us what percentage get UPSOLD. That's really the goal of dangling the 'unbelieveable' low price.

That is NOT true. Dell makes money on everything it does or it dosent do it. End of story.
Yes your right that chipset is old as dirt and still works just fine for gradma and her e-mail and photo collection.
Let me break it down for ya.
AOL = 3 dollars a box
Comcast - 2 dollars a box
McAfee = 4 dollars a box
i can go on and on and on and on... each bit of "free" or "trial" software thats on the system dell charges a per box fee. The real kicker comes in when a customer uses one of thoes pieces of software and purchases a subscription. So that 3 bux from AOL turns into 30 or 40.
So Dell dosent loose a dime. They could give the system away for free and still make some profit off of it probably. _________________

What so your saying that they can just sell them for 100$ and still make a profit? _________________

I would not see any reason to sell computers at or below cost for Dell. For one, they get you with Dell on Call, warantees [which are worth pure gold if you ever have to use them more than once] and pure profiteering, such as jacking up the price on substandard hardware.
case and point: RAM
Dell sells 512MB PC2-4200 modules for $67.96 [they use Micron chips]
I can buy 2x512MB RAM sticks from Corsair on newegg.com for $75.00. These are PC2-4200, compatible with all the newer dell systems, and are a bit faster than what dell supplies.
They simply take the extra $50 or so and pocket it. They do the exact same thing for Processors, extra hard dirves, and other things.
*edit*
I looked up info on hard drives
WD caviar 250GB SATA hard drive [what Dell sells]
Dell: $261.00
newegg.com: $89.00 [I might just have to buy one of these]
they take almost $200 of your money, and pocket it.
all these prices were found on 4-13, and they may or may not be accurate _________________ "The art of Engineering is knowing what you can safely ignore." -Dr. H. Hess

That's why I used to scoff like Hell when I got a call monitor hosed because I didn't even mention Dell's name when advising a customer where they can purchase what they were after. Yes, this really happened:
QA man murmers - "Why didn't you mention us first? You didn't even mention us at all!"
I reply - "Bonus points to you for active listening then."
QA man says - "Whenever a customer asks you where they can buy something, and you know or even think we sell it, make it a point to use our name first. It doesn't matter if you use anyone else's name, just mention ours first next time."
I reply - "Nope. Ain't gonna happen. I may make it a point to mention us somewhere in there, but definately not first. No way man."
QA man says - "Excuse me? Dell pays your wages! If you don't refer sales to us then who's gonna have the money to pay you?"
I replied - "Funny you should say something so asinine...have you SEEN the amount they markup any item? No? Really? Interesting so lemme tell ya...if I get one person to buy one item, you AND I are paid for and secured for the next week with the markup they have! Difference between you and I is, I know that I'll be sleeping soundly tonight with the understanding that I didn't f**k some customer over just so you AND I can be here."
QA man sits there - "..." |
