That would make the carnage occur in FY09; if the weasels want this to take place in the current fiscal year, they'll have to make their move before the end of January. Either way it won't be pretty.
And to think, just a couple of years ago they spent a fortune downsizing our cubes in RR, from 8'x8' to 8'x6', to cram more folks into the existing buildings. At this rate, those who survive can each have their own assigned Team Room! |

Dell doesn't hire people, they rent them, and only until they find a cheaper alternative. Any hiring that is taking place is to compensate for much larger layoffs elsewhere.
Tellya what. Take the job, then come back here in 18 months and tell us if you still have it. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

They have rented me for 11 years so far.
I think all companies rent people to some extent and employees will also use companies until they find a better way to make a living. That is life in the corporate world.
I am getting tired of constant layoffs though, lately we can't relax and going to work has gotten quite stressful. Hopefully the coming year will be better. |

| Hey Family_Guy keep drinking the Koolaid and you might make it to 12 with the new "Lean" DELL! In order to make it much longer you will have to be either underpaid, have no stock options, or have one big brown nose. |

Best luck with that, guy. They rented my best friend in Austin for 11 years too, until last September. He had been in the harddrive industry since they were 8" floppies, nobody else in Dell had higher credentials in drive technology. But he was in quality, as I was, which Dell has clearly determined they no longer value.
The spreadsheet pushers don't value morale either, which is what bites the cowpie sandwich, alongside quality and service, when layoffs become the prime directive. I trust you're shopping your resume. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

I don't see how insulting me helps you make a point but I do believe in freedom of speech so insult all you want. |

I know and I am concerned for my future. I have a lot of time vested and don't really dislike my job. Do people on this board think that the layoffs will be before or after the end of the quarter? |

I liked what I did and the people around me, had one of the best managers I've had anywhere--who got walked out a half hour before the rest of us did.
In 'the big one', 2001, there was a big layoff in the second week of February, after which they told us "It's over, if you're still you're here to stay". Second week of May, they handed us all boxes and 10 minutes to pack them. We were all C2s. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

Not really meant as an insult but more advice actually. For people to continue to survive the cuts and downsizing at DELL they are going to have to be a DELL cheerleader who can fight for themselves (brown nosing may help cuz nobody else is going to fight for you), must have a salary that is well below the top quartile of your paygrade (other you are considered overpaid) and can't have too many stock options or your are considered a liability.
Truth of the matter is Mr. Dell is going to do anything and everything he can to maximize shareholder returns which also helps increase his wealth. This will be done regardless of how it may affect customers or employee's livelihoods.
Best of luck to you and all f the other DELL employees, I can only hope that y'all are planning for what may be ahead and from what everyone says it's not going to be pretty. |

I think it clear to all those that may understand. For those that don't let me explain in brief. The top management at Dell are all Kill Crop's.
A Kill Crop is a person who is born without a soul or looses the right to his or her soul.
He or she surrounds him or herself with others of their kind.
These people are perfectly possessed and have not a shred of conscience.
They are very public about any charity or contributions they make and work the daylights out of the press.
They are embraced by other Kill Crop types in cities and communities.
They are synthetically not authentically human.
They are evil incarnate.
Expect no more.
Any contact with Dell as a customer, vendor or employee will only bring you pain and the Kill Crops gain. _________________ The E in Dell and the E in Enron point the same way!

I remember 2001 very well, it was a tough time and everybody around me got "walked" ,for some reason, I was spared and was very thankful.
I am hoping that I get spared this time also but I am also preparing for the worst.
Will it hurt if I get "walked?" Yes.
Do I have regrets? No.
I have learned a lot over the last 11 years and have prospered. I believe now days no matter where you work you are in danger of getting laid off but I sure don't like having it hang over my head every day. |

I remember that 2001 meeting quite well too... I remember that line... "If you’re in this room, your safe!" or maybe that was my translation of it - and then a few weeks later more people got the boot... and they told us that “these people getting laid off were a continuation on the completion of the previous involuntary separations”. I was like, “what? Translate please”.... and they came back with – “This completes the previous layoff group“. From that day on - I have trusted everything they say... too bad no one can read into my sarcasm… Then about a year later my manager walks by and says while walking by my desk, “Where’s all your stuff?” and promptly without thinking I replied “I am just making it easier for you… if there are more layoffs, I have nothing at this desk I can live without. All you have to do is direct me to the door.” I paid for that remark for a few years… However, to this day, the cubicle that I reside in remains void of any personal belongings, so I remain ready for the boot…
Dell, it’s been fun…but it has been real stressful. Not the Job itself… the wondering if the job itself will be there the next week…. My 13 year anniversary is coming up and hopefully I make it to that date... _________________ Released in 2008! |

Everything is smaller today....the amount of food in a box...our income....the only thing they still have not figured out is how to make a 12 ounce can fit into an 11 ounce can! Or have they?? 2 feet...what is that? They could have shrunk it down to 0x0.
And to think, just a couple of years ago they spent a fortune downsizing our cubes in RR, from 8'x8' to 8'x6', to cram more folks into the existing buildings. |
